Who We Are
Husband and wife Michalis and Hannah have been fortunate enough to call Geneva, NY home since 2016, raising two amazing daughters, Semele and Ino. We established Aszú Wines & Spirits with the vision to give back and enrich this amazing community that has welcomed us.
Our vision is to create a boutique wine and spirits shop in downtown Geneva, offering a curated selection from all over the world that will provide you with compelling wines and spirits, whether for a simple pasta dish or a special occasion. We proudly partner with mostly family-owned producers, many for generations, who craft their wines and spirits artisanally, often farming organically or biodynamically, and are recognized as some of the best from their respective regions.
With 21 years of fine dining restaurant experience, including 11 years as a sommelier and beverage director in Geneva, NY, and Midtown Manhattan, NYC, owner and founder Michalis Kalampoukas brings unique expertise and market insight. During his tenure as a restaurant Sommelier, Michalis gained firsthand insight into a significant retail gap, currently lacking. Additionally, as an Advanced Sommelier and Master Sommelier candidate, he possesses the knowledge to source wines and spirits of the highest quality, from everyday selections to cult and highly collectible wines.
Beyond Michalis’ professional experience, he brings a unique and distinguished set of qualifications. He is a competitive Sommelier, having been honored as the Best Austrian Sommelier in 2023 and the Best Sommelier of Occitanie—a large area in Southern France, encompassing Languedoc, Roussillon, and the Sud-Ouest or South-West—in 2019. These accolades underscore his deep dedication to his craft and his specialized knowledge in these significant wine regions.
Additionally, his Greek heritage provides him with an intimate and comprehensive understanding of the diverse and often underrepresented wines of Greece—a category currently lacking significant presence not only in Geneva but, throughout New York State. Aszu Wines and Spirits will capitalize on this unique expertise, curating a compelling selection of Greek wines for both in-store purchase and online distribution, alongside a thoughtfully chosen selection of beverages from all over the world to elevate your enjoyment.
