Who is Luis Seabra?

Luis Seabra is part of the new generation of winemakers in Portugal. He grew up in the Douro, studied at the University of Vila Real in nearby Tras-O-Montes, and even taught there after graduating. Early in his career, he worked at a large winery in Vinho Verde and as a soil researcher. He later joined the famous Niepoort winery in Douro, where, in 2004, he helped create the first dry white wine in a region then dominated by sweet Port wines.

Starting His Own Winery

In 2013, Seabra started his own small winery with a clear goal: to make traditional Portuguese wine using old vineyards, most of which are organically farmed. His approach is all about respect for the land and classic methods.

About Xisto Illimitado

The Vineyards and Grapes

Xisto Illimitado comes from vineyards in Cima Corgo, one of Douro’s top spots, on yellow schist soils. The vines are 25 to 60 years old, which adds depth and complexity to the wine. The blend uses several Portuguese grapes: Rufete, Touriga Franca, Malvasia Preta, Alicante Bouschet, and Donzelinho Tinto. Except for Alicante Bouschet and Touriga Franca, most of these are thin-skinned varieties, which means the wine is typically lighter in color and has a refined, elegant style.

In the Cellar

The grapes are fermented in stainless steel and concrete vats. After fermentation, the wine matures for 14 to 18 months in old barrels and concrete vats of different sizes. This process helps the wine develop complexity and balance without overwhelming the natural flavors of the grapes.

What Does It Taste Like?

Xisto Illimitado is a medium-bodied red with earthy, elegant character. You’ll notice inviting aromas of red fruit, savory notes, and a distinctive stony, mineral edge. This is a polished, modern wine that still honors the heritage of the Douro.
